With more than 70,000 inhabitants the city
of Giessen is in the centre of Mittelhessen in the federal
state of Hessen. Situated on the river Lahn, its historic
landmarks include the "new castle" (1533-37), the Burgmannenhaus
and some half-timbered houses that survived the bombings of
WWII. The Liebig Museum shows the original laboratory
and workplace of Justus-Liebig. Well worth a visit are
the botanical gardens, which were laid out in 1609 as
a medicinal herb garden, today a sanctuary in the city
centre. Immensely popular is the Mathematikum, a newly
opened museum, which aims at illustrating the uses of
mathematics through a hands-on experience.
Marburg (30 km/20 miles) to the north of and Wetzlar ( 15
km/ 10 miles) to the west of Giessen deserve the tourist´s
attention for their ancient buildings and historic city
centres.
